We
are a small family run retail nursery, Ron Rushbrooke is the owner, he does
the Bookshop & also works as the Head Gardener on the Estate we are
on. If you come here it is His wife Lesley and eldest son Ben that
you will see, as they run the nursery.

How
it all began, Ron (right) in the sales area with his brother Wilfred in
1979 , we started with some bedding plants and a few cacti sold from a lain
down old door .
Slowly we have grown over the years, clearing more and more Rhododendron
ponticum and adding more to the sales area & our range.

And
now how it looks now.
The lower part of the sales area featuring the new greenhouse & new
sales frames & flower beds.
The original sales frame would have been just right of the right hand edge
of the greenhouse.

The
nursery is open from March to October and we try to offer a good selection
of seasonal items such as flowering bulbs in spring and bedding plants (left)
in May & June, along with our year round mainstays.
Our stock changes pretty much weekly as varieties sell out and new ones
become ready for sale.

We
produce as many of our own plants as possible,
supplementing our own plants with those bought in as plugs, small plants, (known
as liners) and some straight-on-sale plants.
Here we can see plants at various stages of production, young seedlings
just emerging, after pricking-out in plug trays and on the right, lined out
in 8cm & 9cm pots, for potting into larger pots & selling next
year.

So
to answer that most frequently asked question: 'What do you do in the
winter?'
We shut the nursery, deal with mail orders, make changes and repairs, get
depressed about the long hours of darkness and endless rain. And then
if he can afford it Ben skives off to New Zealand (left) or Tasmania (bottom left) for a month or so.
